Powered Wheelchair Jargon
Drive Wheel
The wheel that is powered by the motor(s). This is denoted by the letter that comes after the numbers. For example, the Q200R. The “R” after “Q200” stands for rear meaning the drive wheel is the most rearward. Others you may spot are; R – Rear (wheel drive); M- Mid (wheel drive); or F- Front (wheel drive).
Seating System
The seating system of any product refers to but isn’t limited to the areas that the user makes contact with and the components that are involved with seating or positioning. The cushions, backrest, headrest, for example. But also the mechanisms involved with powered tilt or recline. The wheels for example, would not be considered part of the seating system.
Tilt
It is where the seat is tilted rearwards in relation to the ground but the seat to backrest angle remains unchanged.
Tilt is usually adopted to help relieve pressure as it disperses body weight across the entire body rather than a single point. It also helps to increase circulation and general comfort.
Recline
Recline is different from tilt as recline moves the backrest at a fixed pivot point where the backrest meets the base.
Recline gives users the ability to increase the backrest angle to a point where they are more or less upright in order to increase comfort or to support with postural requirements.
Tilt-in-space Wheelchairs / Positioning Wheelchairs
We also offer a range of tilt-in-space wheelchairs also known as positioning wheelchairs. This type of wheelchair is commonly used for those who live in care environments who spend most of the day in a sedentary position or are unable to stand independently and so use a riser recliner or wheelchair daily. Being seated for long periods of time regularly can cause pressure and postural problems, and just feel generally uncomfortable! Tilt-in-space wheelchairs are designed to support the user, increase comfort, and relieve pressure by shifting and spreading the body weight across the entire body rather than just the bottom. Being a wheelchair, the user can also then be transported, taken out and about, and moved into different rooms with the need to struggle. These wheelchairs are also compatible with hoists for ease of transfer. Learn more about tilt-in-space wheelchairs here.
